We had the opportunity to ask the Vancouver based emerging designer, Matt (Advenes) some questions about his brand and how he got started in the industry. Where do you draw your inspiration from?
Everyday life. Whether I’m walking down the street, at a party, or just scrolling through the internet. I would capture certain pieces or outfits in my head to keep ideas alive.
What do you do when you are in a creative lull?
I’d take a step back from what I’m doing and focus on the things that make me happy. When I force myself to be creative, it usually just adds unnecessary stress.
Where did your passion for fashion and creating your own label come from?
I was always into clothes growing up. Having older siblings, I was exposed to a lot of music and culture such as Hip-Hop/Rap. Looking up to certain artists and how they dressed, trying to mimic their styles in my own way.
It really transpired In high-school when I started making hoodies for myself and friends, because everything I wanted in store and online was too expensive for a 16 year old kid. After seeing how much love and recognition I got, I thought to myself, “damn what If I really tried and put my all into this?”
What are the biggest challenges you are facing right now?
Staying consistent with how often I want to release new items and arguing with myself on what I think is cool or not. Also just focusing on things that shouldn’t matter to me. It gets pretty cloudy in my head sometimes when I start to think about outside problems that I can’t control.
